‘Grow Your Own’ scheme helps mark Beethoven Centre’s 10th Birthday

Local residents on the Mozart estate, Queen’s Park, had their green fingers at the ready on the16 July to commemorate ten years of the Beethoven Centre. The community centre is a modern facility available for hire to local groups and delivers a wide-ranging programme of free or affordable activities. It has been at the heart of the local community for a decade.
The celebrations focused around the Mozart ‘Grow Your Own’ project, which was recently shortlisted for a Sustainable Housing Award. Once again residents were given the chance to go green, as Fahema Akthar, Mozart estate housing manager, helped them to pot their own tomatoes, strawberries and herbs, which they could then take home.

Bassam Mahfouz, advice plus centre co-ordinator, said: “It’s great that CityWest Homes is encouraging residents to grow their own fruit and veg. It’s good for the environment and brings some greenery into the heart of built up London”.

Karen Buck, local MP, said that she was excited by the potential of the project and commented: “We’re using waste ground on the estate not just to grow healthy food, but to get people involved for the first time”.

Local resident Debra Baird added: “The activity was great for kids as it shows them to love plants”.

The 'Grow Your Own’ scheme was launched across all estates in Westminster earlier this year. Led by area manager Barry Montgomerie, the estate team and greening group Groundwork have provided green spaces on the estate for residents to grow their own fruit and vegetables to encourage healthy living, promote community spirit and make the estate a greener place to live.
