Bogus telephone callers offering money off bills

We would like to warn residents about a scam involving bogus telephone callers offering the chance to get money off your bills.

The crooks are ringing people across the borough pretending to be council officials, claiming they are entitled to a rebate of up to £7,500.
Victims have been asked to hand over bank details so they can take a one-off 'administration fee' of £95 to process the refund. They are then asked to make a payment to a 'Derek Williams' via a Western Union transaction.

The scam is only thought to have been running for a week, but already 12 residents have realised the con and contacted Westminster's trading standards team.

Police officers are looking into the matter following reports from the council.
The council is advising people not to give out personal details, particularly bank details or PIN, over the phone even if the caller claims to be from the police or council.
