Churchill Gardens boxing club welcomes a VIP
The Lord Mayor of Westminster, Councillor Susie Burbridge, recently paid a visit to the Churchill Gardens boxing club. Over 40 club members greeted their special guest, and gave her a display of pad work, skipping and sparring in the ring.
The club was set up in November 2010 by a group of residents from Churchill Gardens estate. Just ten months on, the club has over 50 members, male and female, of ages 6-49 years old. There are four coaches at the club, all training for a qualification funded through the ABA (Amateur Association of Boxing).
Young club member Brandan Jaupaj, aged nine, was thrilled to tell the Lord Mayor about his boxing passion. He said: "I want to be a boxer when I'm older. It's fun. Before I joined this club, I didn't have anything to do."
The club is run by Dougie Jay, a former professional boxer. Dougie explained to the Lord Mayor how important it is for young people to have something worthwhile to do on a regular basis. He added that the club can help them build their confidence, improve fitness and develop new skills.
The Lord Mayor said: "It was easy to see that everyone at the club, from the youngest to the eldest, were infected by the enthusiasm and devotion of the trainers. The volunteers and trainers are committed to passing on their expertise to the young people living locally and you could see that everyone was thoroughly enjoying themselves. The success of the club shows what determination and dedication can achieve."
