Doors open for youngsters in Queens Park

CityWest Homes and its housing management contractor, Pinnacle PSG, have worked with the Avenues Youth Project to support a new service to young, Muslim girls in the Queens Park area. The project is part of CityWest Homes initiative to help support our communities in Westminster and one way we do this is by seeking new opportunities for young people living on our estates.

The new social club aims to help empower young women aged 10 – 18, by providing a safe environment for them to meet and learn. They will be able to discuss social issues, learn life skills such as sewing and cooking, and receive advice on education opportunities.

Its grand opening took place on the 24 January, and all young people from the local area were invited to attend. There were plenty of activities, including baking, sewing, henna art, manicures and crafts. Dozens of members of the local community stopped by to see what was on offer and show their support. Amongst them was independent film maker, and local Queens Park resident, Moshood Boksh Nazmul.

Moshood writes and directs films which look at Bangladeshi and Muslim issues. His most recent work, ‘Jaimu Koi’, is a story based on the struggling lives of Bangladeshi students in Britain. He commented: “I’ve lived in this area for 17 years and feel a part of this community. I work with local people on my projects as I really want to help inspire them and look into their issues, especially the younger people. It’s always fantastic to see young people getting involved in their community and doing well, which is why I’m so pleased to show my support at this launch.”

Raful Miah, chair of the Queen's Park Bangladesh Association, was also there to support the club, adding: “I feel this event has been good for everyone and I’m really pleased to be here. It has helped bring people closer together, and shown that we are a very strong community in Queens Park.”

There was something for mums too at the launch, with henna painting and manicures. Local resident Mrs Fayed Samira enjoyed a spot of henna while her daughters Noraine and Farah, and son Mehdi, mingled with the other youngsters. She said: “We wanted to see what was on offer, and I think this club is very positive for the community.”
