Golden Oldies take tea with the Lord Mayor
The Golden Oldies club enjoyed a tea party with a difference recently. The community club from Churchill Gardens estate were invited to take high tea with the Lord Mayor, Councillor Susie Burbridge, in her parlour at City Hall.
This was the first of many tea parties being hosted by the Lord Mayor, for groups of older residents from across Westminster. It is an opportunity for them to have an informal chat with the Mayor, while enjoying some lovely refreshments at City Hall. The Golden Oldies were the first club to be invited and were joined by Councillor Sarah Richardson from the Churchill Ward.
Lord Mayor, Councillor Susie Burbridge commented: "It's been a fantastic day for me as Lord Mayor and I hope the club members really enjoyed having tea with me and the local councillor Sarah Richardson.
It’s an opportunity for those senior residents to meet me and have a chat. I hope they found sharing their thoughts and ideas at the same time as having some tea to be a most pleasant and useful way of passing an afternoon and enjoyed it as much as I did.”
Afterwards, the club were invited to the plate room to view an incredible display of civic treasures, including traditional maces (a sword like weapon) and gifts from state visits and dignitaries. Attendees could also take in the panoramic view from the parlour on the 18th floor. CityWest Homes then arranged for a coach to pick up the club members and take them back home to Churchill Gardens estate.
Ivy Powell, Chair of the Golden Oldies, said: “We all really enjoyed ourselves. A lot of us have never been to the Lord Mayor’s parlour and it was a real treat for everyone.”
The Golden Oldies club provides somewhere for people to get together and chat over a cup of tea. Anyone over 60 is welcome to join and the club is fast growing with 80 members so far. As well as running coffee mornings and table top sales, the group organise various activities throughout the year. Membership is £3 a year and you can find out more by contacting Sue Walsh at 07553 380467, or suewalsh55@btinternet.com. Alternatively, stop by for a Churchill coffee morning on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10.30am to 11.45am at Churchill Hall, Lupus Street, SW1V 3AL.
