Mozart estate is alive with the sound of music

On the 28 July, CityWest Homes Mozart estate team and Queens Park Bangladeshi Association teamed up to throw residents a ‘Party in the Park’. The community event was a fun packed afternoon of activities which everyone could enjoy, and was the first of its kind on the estate.

Amongst the henna art and face painting for children, there was live Bengali singing and dancing, where residents were invited up on stage to join in. The band was also joined by a special guest- singer Roshwanara Moni. Roshwanara is well known on Bengali TV, Channel S, the most popular Bengali TV programme in the Asian community. She is also known throughout the Bengali community for singing at festivals, community events and weddings. In addition to this, Roshwanara shares in common with the audience she was singing to that she is a local resident.

“I am Bangladeshi but I was born in the UK,” Roshwanara Moni commented, “and I live locally. We wanted to do this event to help motivate everyone from kids to adults to enjoy themselves. Though this is an Indian event, we want to play songs which are a multi cultural bit of everything, because we want people to come along and learn all about culture.”

As well as entertainment, there was plenty of free food and drinks available for residents. A delicious 'HALAL' BBQ sizzled through the afternoon, provided by George Redway, who is UK Nationwide Award winner of best West Indian Cuisine and local resident of Mozart estate.

Fahema Akhtar, housing manager, CityWest Homes, who helped organise the event, said: “This is the first time we have had an event like this on the estate and I’m very proud to be a part of it. The team have been with me every step of the way and I feel the event has helped bring the whole community together. Everyone has been absolutely thrilled and happy that Roshwanara is singing here, too!”

The Mozart estate team and Queens Park Bangladeshi Association have worked hard to make the event a day to remember. The playground on Lancefield Street, where the event was held, was full to bursting with local residents joining in.

“It’s gone really well,” said Rita Begun, a member of the Queens Park Bengali Association who helped with the event. “Everyone is having fun and it’s great to see all these families enjoying the day. It’s been a fantastic turnout.”

Darren Levy, director of customer services, CityWest Homes, added: “The event was a success in many ways: it’s had a huge turnout, provided a multicultural day of activities and brought many neighbours together for an event which has not been seen before on the Mozart estate.

But perhaps one of the most successful aspects of the event was the hard work put in by the estate frontline staff. They have showed that their work is not confined to the estate office- they bring it right out into the community and onto the residents’ doorsteps.”
