MozART reveals some new talent in Queens Park
Westminster is host to some of the nation’s best loved art galleries such as the National and the Queens. Thanks to a local competition, they can now add Naylor House, from the CityWest Homes managed Mozart estate, Queens Park to the list as well.
At the end of last year, children from three local Queens Park schools, Wilberforce Primary, Queens Park Primary and Ark Atwood Primary, were invited to take part in the ‘MozART competition’. The community competition was organised by CityWest Homes and Pinnacle PSG, and gave local children the opportunity to submit their art work. It received a fantastic response, with 160 children taking part.
Their masterpieces were celebrated on the 11 January 2012, when the exterior wall of Naylor House was used as a giant cinema screen to project all 160 drawings and paintings. Around 300 proud parents, carers and children gathered at the event to celebrate their achievements, and see the winners be presented with their prize.
One competition winner, Sana Najmaddin (aged 10) said: “This is definitely the most exciting event ever on the Mozart estate and I can’t wait to go and tell all my friends that I was one of the winners and show everyone my prize”.
Fahema Akthar, a housing manager from Queens Park estate office, organised the event. She commented: “Not only was it good to see so many local children take part in the competition, but we also had a great turnout on the night when we exhibited the artwork and presented the prizes.”
Ward Councillor, Barrie Taylor, also attended the event and said: “What was most noticeable about the exhibition was the enthusiasm, pride and hope shown by the children - a serious contrast to some of the troubles experienced in London in recent months.”
The ‘MozART competition’ is now set to become an annual event, establishing Naylor House as one of the more unusual art exhibition venues in London.
A local resident Emma Huggins, who attended the event, added: “Something as little as an art competition and a cake stall goes a long way, so I would like to encourage the council to continue to put on such uplifting and positive events for all who live on estate.”
