Mozart's green fingers humming along

Despite the wintry chill, Queen’s Park residents on the Mozart estate have been planting up a storm, getting flowers, shrubs and bulbs into the ground for spring.

The ‘Mozart Grow Your Own’ project, set up by Queen’s Park area manager Barry Montgomerie, his dedicated team and greening group Groundwork, aims to provide growing spaces for residents to enjoy the fruit of their own labours.

There are now three dedicated growing areas – the Leeve House Allotments, the Lancefield Court Healthy Living Garden and The MozArt Garden, with over 30 residents signed up to start planting.

Some resident gardeners have already gotten in on the act by removing concrete tiles, breaking up stony ground to access the soil, and planting a plethora of herbs, berries, fruit trees and vegetables.

The grow areas are just part of a huge effort to green up the estate to encourage community spirit and health eating, and discourage anti-social behaviour in an area that sees much of its fair share.

Yew trees and an herb garden in a chequerboard pattern have been planted along John Fearon Walk, once a hot spot for anti-social behaviour. A bigger mural is also planned for the aptly named MozArt garden in the summer months.

Hanging baskets and planter boxes filled with heather have already been put up around the estate, though vandals have been taking them down.

Barry says, “It’s a war of attrition. They keep bringing them down and we keep putting them back. We want to show vandals and people who want to commit anti-social behaviour that we are not prepared to let them ruin our area.”

If you are a keen gardener, or a novice who wants to meet their neighbours and grow your own fruit and vegetables, contact the Queen’s Park estate office for more information on how to get involved, telephone 020 7245 2651 or email QueensParkEO@cwh.org.uk
