Parents tell it in Queen's Park

A street party in Dart Street, Queen's Park marked the official opening of the Tell It Parents Action Group which aims to unpick some of the problems facing local communities today.

The party was popular with children and parents, who enjoyed games of table tennis, decorating recycling bins, a barbecue, a drum band, and street art sessions with local artist, Brian Okello.

Founded by parents Angela Singhate and Melody Odusnaya, Tell It Parents Action group has been running drop in surgeries for parents come together for a range of activities. These include networking, topical workshops and running parenting programmes such as Triple P. Tell It has a network of trained community mentors who can also work with young people or parents on a one-to-one basis.

Angela Singhate said: "We really want people to know about the drop in surgeries. There is an urgent need for parents to get together and begin to unpick some of the problems taking place within our communities. They can come in and relax over a cup of tea, but we also need to have some challenging conversations as we work towards a collective vision of strong community parenting. We want parents to be part of this conversation.”

The drop-in sessions are held every Monday from the Tell It office on Dart Street between 10.00m and 3.00pm, and after 3pm by appointment.

Local councillors Patricia McAllister and Barrie Taylor were keen for people to support the project. They said: “There is a desperate need for even more support for families in the Queen's Park ward. We are very interested that the group is focused on the young and their parents and are keen to see it succeed."

Orson Carryl, Queen’s Park estate village manager who helped put on the launch, said: "The Tell it Parents Action Group is a great resource for local families. It is brilliant that parents have set up this group to support local people and develop a space where they can discuss issues that are relevant to them.”
