Queens Park youths scoop five awards
The Phoenix youth club, run by Joynul Miah, trainee housing manager, Mozart estate, has been formally recognised for all its fantastic work in the community. The group, made up of 25 youths from Queens Park, scooped five prizes at the recent London Tigers Silver Anniversary Award Ceremony, which was attended by over 500 people from across the capital. The event was also televised and shown on sky channels NTV and Channel S. The group won three awards for Outstanding Achievements and two for Outstanding Volunteers.
The club is run on behalf of the London Tigers, a sports and youth organisation working in Westminster for hard to reach individuals, and funded by CityWest Homes and local Councillor Barrie Taylor. It was setup up for youths who live within the local area to help them take part in a wide range of activities, from team building and homework classes, to music and dance.
Joynul commented: “I am very grateful that CityWest Homes have invested in our project and it helps us to make a difference to our residents. The youth culture of London has received some negativity press lately, so this is a brilliant example of youths receiving recognition for doing something positive in their local community. I know most of their families personally and they are very proud of them.”
The youth club also performed a dance routine at the awards ceremony and one of the members even sang for the first time in front of the huge audience. Borris Johnson, who is a patron for the London Tigers was unable to attend this year but sent a video message which was played on the night.
Councillor Barrie Taylor added: “It was a pleasure to attend the awards ceremony, and the London Tigers organised a fantastic event. As Queens Park councillors we were very pleased to invite the London Tigers to help run the youth group, and their success is clear in the five awards they received for Outstanding Achievements.”
