Soho leaps into action
Enthusiastic residents from Dufours Place in trendy Soho joined forces with our team of office-based staff to 'leap into action' and give their roof terrace a late summer clean up. They spent the day clearing moss from between the paving slabs, sanding and varnishing picnic benches, painting the perimeter walls and thinning out the numerous plants that were already on the roof. Donated by a Dufours resident over the years, the plants were replanted and arranged into newly-built planters installed by the CityWest Homes handymen team.
The team’s hard work has paid off and there is now a fantastic space for residents to enjoy the early autumn days. They have also created a good separate space to potentially lay another green roof in the area. CityWest Homes already manages a green roof at Kemp House in Berwick Street, which attracted the rare Black Redstart bird in its first week. Green roofs are a significant component of urban greening – especially in high density urban areas.
About her day of leaping into action, Dufours Place resident Nijole Fernando said: “It’s a wonderful break away from what I usually do. I like painting and giving something a new look. I was really pleased to be asked to get involved in a project that will help the community.”
Rodney Pedroza, Soho estate manager for CityWest Homes, said: “We had a great day and everyone really got stuck in to help. Sometimes people do not realise that there is a thriving local community in Soho – it’s not all restaurants and nightclubs.
“The roof terrace looks so much better now that it’s had a makeover and we’ll be looking forward to having the green roof put on.”
CityWest Homes carry out a number of leap into action events throughout the year where residents and office-based staff make-over small areas of estates to make a big visual impact.
The next leap into actions will be held at Soho’s Ingestre Court, a children’s playground at the Hallfield estate in Bayswater and a garden make-over at Oaktree House in Maida Vale.
Mark Hoyland, chief executive of CityWest Homes said: “I’d like to thank everyone who gets involved in the leap into action events across the city. As well as our residents, it’s an opportunity for staff to give back to the community and the impact it generates cannot be underestimated.”
