Sweet success for Lillington and Longmoore estate, Pimlico

Honey lovers from across London recently swarmed to the first ever London Honey Show. The event offered bee enthusiasts the chance to enter their honey for an award and CityWest Homes’ Lillington and Longmoore estate was one of them. The estates’ very own home-grown brand of honey was shortlisted in the Best Honey from First Year beekeeper category.

Urban beekeeper Doctor Luke Dixon, first approached the estate with the idea of keeping bee hives a year ago. Lillington and Longmoore are well known for their fantastic garden areas, which are perfect for sustaining bees.

Dr Dixon commented: “It was fantastic to enter the first ever London Honey Show. This was the first year we’ve produced honey from the beehives, so though we didn’t win, it was still a great opportunity to showcase what we’ve done so far. Next year we will have three more beehives, so we should have lots more honey and lots more awards to enter.

Local residents on the estate have been interested in what we’re doing. The hive has been a wonderful success and very self sustaining. It helps make people more aware of their estate and proves that even when you live in the heart of a busy city, there’s still plenty of potential for growing your own produce.”

Lillington and Longmoore estate were also recently in the news for winning the prestigious Green Flag Award for the fifth year in a row. The award recognises that the gardens are well-maintained and provide excellent open spaces for the local community. CityWest Homes are still the first social housing provider to have won the award.

Mark Hoyland, chief executive, CityWest Homes, congratulated the teams’ efforts. “We actively encourage our residents to get involved in projects like this, which bring together the local community and promotes healthy living. It’s fantastic to see our expert team of gardeners working alongside our residents to create a nice environment and harvesting their own produce.”

As Lillington and Longmoore looks forward to a bigger harvest, who knows: you might see their honey buzzing its way to a supermarket near you.
