We’ve been shortlisted for a Sustainable Housing Award!

We are thrilled to have been shortlisted in the ‘Sustainability Innovation’ category of the Sustainable Housing Awards 2011 for our Mozart ‘Grow your own’ project.

Now in its fourth year, the awards are organised by Inside Housing magazine and its sister publication Sustainable Housing. Each year they focus on the best “green” social housing projects in the UK, as well as the organisations responsible for them.

The ‘Mozart Grow Your Own’ project was set up in early 2011. It was led by area manager Barry Montgomerie, the estate team and greening group Groundwork on the Mozart estate, Queen’s Park. Green spaces were provided on the estate for residents to grow their own fruit and vegetables to help champion healthy living, encourage community spirit, tackle anti-social behaviour and make the estate a greener place to live.

The scheme has now been launched across all estates in Westminster. Local residents are encouraged to submit ideas for growing spaces on their estates, for which CityWest Homes then provides them with seeds, plants and advice from its team of estate gardeners. Residents are also able to apply for grants from CityWest Homes and Capital Growth (a national campaign to support over 2,000 new community growing spaces in London by 2012).

The awards ceremony will take place at the Hilton Hotel in London’s Park Lane on Friday 21 October- so we wish the ‘Grow your own’ project team the best of luck!
