Fire safety for tenants
Fires are the main cause of death in the home in this country. The best way to deal with fire is to take precaution to stay safe in and around your home.
In the event of a fire
Remember in a fire, dial 999 immediately.
If you live in a block of flats or sheltered accommodation, there may be special fire procedures. Make sure you are aware of signage in your block.
Take these precautions
• fit smoke detectors in your home and ensure that they are working properly and tested regularly. Call London Fire Brigade on 08000 28 44 28 to get a free fire safety check and alarm fitting.
• keep matches, lighters and similar items out of children's reach at all times
• plan a fire escape route and meeting point with your family so they all know what to do in the event of a fire
• inspect and sweep electric fires regularly
• keep electrical appliances in good condition and report any electrical faults to us
• keep electrical leads away from rugs and furniture
• keep flammable liquids in suitable containers and in a safe place
• avoid overloading electrical sockets and circuits
• only use candles when you are in the room and keep them away from furnishings, curtains and combustible matter
• extinguish smoking materials fully and do not throw cigarette ends out of your window
