My Westminster memories

Joan Hall

Joan Hall moved to Vale Royal in 1980, when she was in her sixties.

You may recognise Joan from her photograph above as she has starred in advertisements for Cadburys and Heinz - and she can still recite her lines! She also acted on stage in Soho.

Before to moving to Vale Royal in Soho, Joan lived in West London and would travel into the area for work. She was very familiar with Vale Royal and had watched it being built from the ground up on her commute.

“I would sit on the top deck of a double decker bus to get a good view of the building. I remember thinking how amazing it would be to live right in the heart of Soho. I registered and could not believe my luck when I got offered a property.

“My first memory of moving to Vale Royal was meeting my neighbours; everyone was very nice and friendly. The community was so diverse with a real mix of elderly and young people from all over the world. I think that’s what makes it such a special place.”

While she has seen a lot of change in her lifetime, Joan believes Soho has retained its old charm. Her favourite place has always been Soho Square, which is a great spot for people watching.

“Seeing all the fabulous ways that people dress; oh it does make me laugh!

“My advice to anyone visiting Westminster would be lose yourself in the streets of Soho. Of course you can see all of these amazing tourist sites but there is a really special magic atmosphere on the streets of Soho.

“Westminster is fun, bustling and entertaining. I really feel that I’m so fortunate to live here, it is the best location in the world.”
